This morning's reading opens The Prophets Anointing, a book that begins by taking away everything the reader hoped to admire.
There is a silence that exists before God speaks, but it is not emptiness. It is government without explanation. Before the prophet discovers a voice, he must enter this silence and learn that heaven is not waiting for his contribution. God is already God. Truth is already true. The throne is already occupied.
Before God gives the prophet a voice, He confronts the voice the prophet has been using to protect himself. The altar therefore precedes the utterance — not because God is reluctant to use men, but because men are too willing to use God.
Stand, then, at the threshold without hurry. Leave behind the appetite for titles, secrets, mantles, and spiritual distinction. Do not ask first what a prophet can do. Ask what God must do to a man before the man can safely carry consequence.
