This morning's reading opens When God Became a Satisfying Idea, a book for anyone whose certainty about God has never once cost them anything.
There is a way of believing in God that saves us from ever having to meet Him. It is not unbelief. Unbelief is often too honest for this. The more dangerous thing is a faith that has learned enough of God to remain undisturbed by Him.
At some point, God became satisfying as an idea. Not satisfying because He had been known, but because He had been made knowable in the safest possible way. We learned the language of surrender while preserving the self that was meant to be surrendered.
The question is not merely whether we believe in God. The question is whether the God in whom we believe is allowed to remain God: free to contradict us, command us, unsettle us, search us, and lead us beyond every version of Him designed to leave us unchanged.
