Men who explain too quickly often think they are defending God. But God does not need to be defended by false simplicity. He is not honoured when His name is used to flatten the weight of human experience into slogans that cannot weep. Truth does not become more true because it lacks tenderness. Sound doctrine does not become more sound because it is spoken without discernment. A sentence can be correct and still be cruel when it is used to escape compassion.
