The Prophets
Anointing

The first error in the prophetic is not that men speak falsely. It is that men begin with the prophet. They begin with the vessel, the voice, the mantle, the unusual perception, the atmosphere around the man, the stories of accuracy, the trembling of those who heard him, and the consequences that followed his words. They begin with what appeared on earth and then attempt to climb backward into heaven. But revelation cannot be understood from its effect alone. A river is not explained by the place where it becomes visible. It must be traced to its source.
The prophetic office has been made mysterious in the wrong direction. Men have studied the personality of the prophet more than the government that sent him. They have examined his habits, tones, silences, garments, relationships, methods, and manifestations. They have copied his language and inherited his mannerisms. They have learned how he pauses before speaking, how he lowers his voice when announcing judgment, how he introduces a revelation, and how he makes a room conscious of his presence. Yet a man can reproduce every visible feature of a prophet and remain entirely absent from the place where prophets are made.
The prophet is not the beginning of prophecy. God is. The anointing is not born when oil touches a human head. It is revealed when the eternal purpose of God takes possession of a human life. Before there was a mantle, there was the will of the Father. Before there was a mouth, there was the Word. Before there was a prophet standing before kings, there was the Anointed One standing before the Father.
The prophet is not the source of the word. He is the consequence of it.
